Founder’s Feature: Fredrick Burns

CultureSnap founder talks culture & tech

Fredrick Burns, creator of CultureSnap, saw the current landscape of social media as the perfect foundation to give the African-American community a stronger voice and also push “The Culture” forward. His aspirations don’t stop at a social-media companion app, however, Burns’s vision is to create a hub that is home to all things culture related. The Bridge recently had a chance to pick Mr. Burns’ brain regarding his thoughts on how technology plays into the future of black culture.

CultureSnap was created with filling a “cultural void in the photo and video editing industry” in mind. Why?

My generation spends 50 percent of the time on their phones using the big four social media sites—Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. I noticed none of those platforms gave African-Americans a way to represent our culture. Whenever something occurred whether it be a new hip-hop song or something that happened on a reality TV show, all we had was a hashtag to represent for the cause.

Why is that kind of cultural representation important?

Uniqueness is what embodies the human race. Being able to own who you are gives you a sense of pride in your roots. Not being able to represent your culture causes individuals to be out of sync with who they truly are and where they have come from. I wanted to change that.

In what other ways can tech push the culture forward?

Bringing awareness to the culture brings change, information changes situations. Platforms like Black Girls Code and For The Culture are using technology to showcase Black Excellence. Success is a mindset, so when individuals are able to see others similar to themselves succeed, they begin to push forward and be motivated to create something great like the people they read about.

What is your ultimate vision for CultureSnap?

CultureSnap will be the visual representation of the Culture. With our new update we are going beyond being a photo-filtering app. CultureSnap will be a one-stop shop for all things for the culture from filters to stickers to news.
