AT&T Awards $1M to Filmmaker
Faraday Okoro is first recipient of “AT&T Presents: Untold Stories” grant
In partnership with the Tribeca Film Festival, AT&T recently announced the launch of “AT&T Presents: Untold Stories,” an inclusive film program where AT&T will provide funding of up to $1 million for one talented filmmaker to bring his or her film to life.
Here’s how it worked: At a live-pitch event Apr. 18 in New York City, five talented and diverse filmmakers curated by the Tribeca Film Institute presented their story ideas and film scripts to a greenlight committee made up of notables in the film and production world, including AT&T Chief Brand Officer, Fiona Carter. The event was live-streamed on the Tribeca Facebook page. The winner, Faraday Okoro received $1 million in funding for his film “Nigerian Prince” and will be set up with one-on-one mentorship from seasoned industry professionals.
The remaining four participating filmmakers each received a $10,000 grant from AT&T. The winning project will premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and air on several of AT&T's video platforms, including DIRECTV NOW.
The “AT&T Presents: Untold Stories” program is also the focus of this year's official Tribeca Film Festival trailer, which will be shown before every film during the Festival.
In addition, AT&T is hosting several events during this year’s festival. A complete listing is below:
- AT&T Presents TFI Network (Apr. 19)—This three-day networking event for Tribeca Film Institute grantees and other selected filmmakers will include various panels and presentations from some of the industry’s most iconic filmmakers and experts.
- AT&T’s DIRECTV premiere of “The Exception” (Apr. 26)—Immediately after this special screening of this World War II thriller, attendees will join the film’s cast at an after party.
